Beltane - Midsummer Newsletter
May 13, 2005
Beltane - Midsummer Newsletter May 1st - June 21st Well, here we are. Spring! Will it ever get warm? I finally got up the nerve to put away my snow shovel! I'm not so brave as to put away my winter coat yet. I'm cautious yet optimistic that warmth is on its way. We're trying a new thing here at the Herb Shop, seasonal newsletters. We appreciate any feedback. We're going to touch on a few different subjects in these newsletters. A brief schedule of events, new schedules for readings, perhaps some herbal recipes and seasonal information! Please see the obligatory disclaimer at the end of this newsletter. :) Enjoy! Spring Allergies - Yes, spring is in the air...and so is the pollen! We've already noticed an influx of folks suffering from itchy watery eyes, sinus congestion and scratchy throats. One of the easiest folk remedies for allergies is fresh LOCAL honey. One teaspoon per day seems to help quite a bit as well as coat that scratchy throat. It's natures allergy shot! Beginning this treatment a few weeks in advance is the most recommended application. There are many herbs to help as well. The school of thought here in the herb world has always been to treat the liver as part of your allergy treatment. By detoxifying and clearing the liver both spring and fall keeps it in top shape to deal with these invaders! Dandelion is the classic herb to wring out the liver. It increases bile output to flush the system. So eat your weedies! (unless of course they've been chemically treated!) Nettle leaf is a natural histamine blocker and makes a great addition to hayfever tea blends. Elder flower, yarrow and goldenrod, yes I said goldenrod, are wonderful for dealing with those sniffles. Goldenrod has unfortunately received a bad rap because it blooms at the same time as ragweed which is the real airborne pollen culprit. Peppermint is a great tea for helping to drain those stuffy sinuses and it makes everything taste great. Just a few thoughts, there are many more! SVHS's Hayfever Tea Blend 1 part Nettle Leaf 1 part Elder Flowers 1 part Peppermint Leaf 1/2 part Goldenrod This basic tea can be customized from this point to address side issues such as scratchy throat, headache, etc... Bug Bites - The June issue of Herbs for Health magazine has a great article on dealing with bug bites and all sorts of itchies. Some of my favorite things to use are as follows. Lavender essential oil, this stuff is a medicine cabinet in a bottle! It works great on stings, bites, all manner of itchy stuff and it smells great too. Clay and in a pinch toothpaste will work at taking the itch out of a bite, the peppermint helps too. If you can identify plantain that too is great on any kind of an itch, just crush it or chew it and apply. I often take a handful of ice and throw it in a baggie when I'm camping, add a couple of squished slices of lemon and some drops of lavender essential oil, roll up a face cloth and seal the whole thing up and let it melt. Whenever I need a little help repelling bugs I wipe myself down with the cloth and stick it back it the baggie. There seems to be a lot of studies showing that catnip essential oil is more effective than DEET at repelling critters. All the critters except your cat, who'll think you're the greatest! Astrology Readings - Daphne has been practicing astrology since 1987, where she started studying at the Interface Institute in Watertown, MA with Jungian astrologer/psychotherapist Tom Watkins. After moving to the San Francisco Bay Area in 1989, she started her own holistic counseling practice through the East West Bookshop, in Menlo Park, CA, the oldest and most established metaphysical center in N. California, run by the Ananda disciples of Paramahansa Yogananda, the great avatar/teacher who first brought the teachings of yoga to the west in 1920. She then spent six years working with the cloisterd Sisters of the Dominican Order at a monastery in Menlo Park, and delved seriously into the study of mystical Catholicism--this is in addition to exposure to Greek Orthodox, Anglican, and Jewish, as well as later, Hindu, Buddist and Native American shamanic traditions.
